Cultural identity lies at the center of my practice, serving as both subject and catalyst for visual exploration. Born in Maragüez, Puerto Rico, and working for decades in Chicago, I embody a dual perspective that informs the formal and symbolic language of my paintings. This position of in-between—at once rooted in the Caribbean and shaped by the diaspora—generates a visual vocabulary where memory, ritual, and geography converge. Vivid hues echo the tropical landscape of my birthplace, while layered forms reflect the complexity of cultural negotiation within a metropolitan context.

Art as a Mirror of Identity
My work resists static definitions of culture, presenting instead an identity in constant motion—fragmented, resilient, and transformative. Symbols such as roosters, ancestral figures, and tree-like structures emerge as metaphors for continuity and adaptation. These motifs function not only as personal emblems but also as collective signifiers, carrying with them the histories of migration, survival, and renewal. In this sense, each painting becomes a site where cultural identity is not merely represented but actively reimagined, offering viewers a lens through which to consider their own position within broader narratives of belonging and displacement.
